Joey Chestnut’s Competitive Eating Records

Joey Chestnut from San Jose, California added one more record to his competitive eating career after he ate 45 pizza slices in 10 minutes at a contest in New York City last Sunday.

The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFCE) ranks Chestnut #1 worldwide, followed by #2 Patrick Bertoletti (previous pizza eating record holder with 22 slices in 10 minutes) and #3 Takeru Kobayashi.

Chestnut won the 4th July Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs and Buns contest eating 66 in 12 minutes in 2007 and recently won a contest in Tennessee last month by eating 93 Krystal hamburgers in 8 minutes, beating Kobayashi.

Among his achievements are eating 182 chicken wings in 30 minutes, 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes and drinking a gallon of milk in 41 seconds.

Competitive Eater Dies

A Taiwanese student vying to become the “Big Stomach King” died after scarfing down two rice- and cheese-filled steamed buns, along with some of his teammates’ food—a rare but not unheard-of competitive-eating death.

Twenty-three-year-old Chen (he’s not fully identified in this Reuters report) fainted and died yesterday after “relentless” vomiting during the contest at Dayeh University in Changhua, Taiwan, according to the newswire.

Chen may have died from eating too fast, not too much, Huang Te-hsiang, the university’s dean of student affairs, told Reuters. (Another report in Taiwan News quotes her as saying he may have choked to death.) “I can’t say why he died,” Huang told Reuters. “He had been in the contest before. He was a strong guy.”

Surprisingly, the handful of known competitive eating deaths don’t seem to be from athletes’ stomachs bursting, says Jason Fagone, author of the 2006 book Horsemen of the Esophagus: Competitive Eating and the Big Fat American Dream. Whereas medical case reports have documented deadly stomach ruptures, most are among bulimics, author Mary Roach notes in this 1999 piece in Salon. “The stomach is amazingly resistant to trauma,” Fagone says. “You can really, really abuse it repeatedly and it will hold up.”

Eating Champ Delivers Top Pizza Performance

New York: Chowdown champ Joey Chestnut has done it again — this time proving he’s a pizza powerhouse.

He downed 45 slices in 10 minutes on Sunday to win the first Famous Famiglia World Pizza Eating Championship in New York’s Times Square.

The 24-year-old from San Jose says he fasted for more than a day to prepare. He folded and squeezed the slices to make them easier to swallow.

Man Eats 15 Pound Hamburger

Man Eats 15 Pound Hamburger at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield, Pa.

Brad Sciullo of Uniontown, Pa. took 4 hours and 39 minute to eat a 15-pound cheese burger The burger had toppings weighing in at five-pounds, bringing the over all total weight to over 20 pounds! The gamut of toppings included bun, tomatoes, mild banana peppers, cheese, onions, lettuce. And don’t forget an entire cup each of ketchup, relish, mayonnaise and mustard. Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub is in located Clearfield, Pa. Brad is the first person to finish the huge burger, named “The Beer Barrel Belly Bruiser”.

Sciullo’s reason for eating the burger was, “to see if I could.” He also added “I’ve always had a heck of a capacity and I can down about two gallons of water and I can do a gallon of milk in 20-some seconds,” said Sciullo, a chef at Pasta Lorenzo’s in Uniontown.

Sciullo won $400, T-shirts, a certificate for his feat. Thinking about matching Sciullo’s feat? Keep in mind that you must finish in under five hours, and get ready for one heck of a “burger hangover”.
